I have read that all the names Nichols, Nicholas, Nickels, Nickless etc. have Greek origins where the name translates as Conquering People. I have no evidence to support this, but it is an interesting idea.
The spelling Nickless first appeared in the village of Mortimer, Hampshire, Southern England in the late 1600's. Before that the spelling tended to vary considerably which makes tracing back any further very difficult.
Several members of my family emigrated to America, Australia and New Zealand in the 1850's.
We are not the only Nickless family. There is an unconnected and larger family based in Shropshire, West Midlands of England. See the links below Other Nickless links. There also appears to be a large Nickless family in America who settled around 1700 which does not yet appear to be linked.
